This includes writing tickets for anyone parking along the curb of the school, blocking driveways, driving through the “Buses Only” zone, and parking in “No Parking” areas of the parking lot effective from approximately 6:45 am to 5:00 pm Monday – Friday.Law enforcement has emphasized that this also involves families parking along the curb in front of the school to drop off or pick up students from the main office and students that attend the Champions program before and after school. Staff, families, and visitors are being reminded to follow the correct traffic path for the parking lot (use the “Panther Paws” route) and to park in appropriate parking spaces. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact the main office at (757) 220-4067.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Parents are always welcome at MES! When bringing your child to school in the mornings, we ask that you bring in your Driver’s License to sign in before walking your children to their classroom and sign out before leaving the building. We also ask that EACH visitor use the doorbell; located on the right brick wall at the main entrance to Magruder, and wait to be acknowledged by office staff before entering the building. The Main Office staff will greet each visitor and ask for the visitor’s name, ask the visitor to face the intercom, and request the reason for the visit.  We also ask that once in the building you proceed to the main office for further assistance. Most importantly we ask that individuals entering the building DO NOT hold the door for individuals that have not been acknowledged by using the doorbell system. Thank you for your support in keeping our school safe!~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~MES is participating in the Clothing to Cash Recycling Program. Clean out your closet and help our school raise money! Magruder Elementary will be paid for every pound we collect. Look for the large white collection bin on the left side once you enter the school parking lot. The goal is to FILL our collection bin WEEKLY with as many plastic bags of clothing, shoes, and other textiles as possible. Help support our school and save the environment one bag at a time!~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Please remember to sign out at the end of your visit at MES; even in the morning after walking your students to class. Thank you!~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~The school hours for this school year 8:40 am – 3:20 pm. We will use the allotted time for instructional purposes to meet the needs of our students. Therefore, the office staff will not dismiss students between 3:00 pm – 3:20 pm to prevent disruption of the school day activities. We appreciate your assistance with this matter. Thank you.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Students begin entering the building at 8:30 am, with the tardy bell ringing at 8:40 am. Students should not arrive prior to 8:30 am, as supervision is not provided prior to that time. Before and after school daycare is provided by the Medallion Company (Champions) and is located in our MES Cafetorium. Their phone number is (757) 253-0781. Additionally, for the safety of our students, all students that arrive after 8:40 am must be signed in tardy at the main office by their parent/guardian. If there are no MES staff members outside in the drop off line please park your car and walk your student to the main office. If you have any further questions or concerns please contact the main office at 757-220-4067. We appreciate your assistance with this matter. Thank you.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~All transportation changes must come to the office in writing. For the safety of our students we cannot take any requests over the telephone. Additionally, teachers will not have access to their classroom telephones during instructional time, and will only be able to access messages. If a student needs to ride the bus home with another student, the parents of both students must write a note requesting this arrangement. The notes should include the students’ first and last names, their teachers’ names and the bus route number. All transportation changes should be handed to teachers before class begins.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~For the safety of our students and staff during loading (3:00 – 4:00 pm) and unloading (8:15 – 9:00 am) please note that there should be NO CAR traffic in our bus loop located in the front of Magruder Elementary. NOTES FROM THE CLINICToo Sick for SchoolWe have come to the time of year to expect cold and flu symptoms.  Some of these are unavoidable but there are several things you can do at home to help prevent illness and keep everyone feeling healthy.  Here are some tips to remember:WASH, WASH, WASH YOUR HANDS!  This is still the best defense against illness.  Encourage your children to wash, especially before meals, using soap and warm water.  To ensure they are taking enough time to adequately kill germs, have them sing the ABC song while scrubbing.Get plenty of rest.  School age children should get 9-11 hours of sleep each night.  Grownups should try to get 8 hours.Drink lots of fluids and eat a balanced diet - especially breakfast!  I'm seeing a lot of children with stomachaches and headaches due to hunger.Dress appropriately for cold weather.  Please help your child choose warm, comfortable clothing for school each day, including socks.  Make sure they are wearing a coat and you may want to consider a hat and gloves as well.  Even in cool weather they need the exercise and fresh air during recess.Unfortunately, even with the best care, a virus can make us sick.  Cold symptoms are best relieved with rest and fluids and may last as long as 10 days.  If symptoms persist longer than this, the child should see a physician. Keeping a sick child at home prevents the spread of illness in the school community and allows the child an opportunity to rest and recover. Please use the symptoms below as guidelines for when it is better for your child - and his/her classmates - to stay home and recuperate: Flu-like symptoms Fever over 100 degrees - A child should not come back to school until the temperature is normal for 24 hours without medication.Active gastrointestinal symptoms to include vomiting or diarrheaAny rash accompanied by a feverSore throat with a fever and/or rashCoughing up yellowish or greenish phlegm Ear pain and/or excessive eye watering or drainage Any open sores which appear to be infected (red, warm to touch) Evidence of lice/nits that have not been treated Please call if you have any questions or would like to discuss your child's illness.  If you have a change in address or phone number, remember to contact the school office.  It is very important to be able to reach you in the event your child becomes ill at school.  Have a safe and HEALTHY winter!Mrs. Robinson, RNSchool Nurse~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Magruder Elementary School is partnering with the American Red Cross to host our 2nd Annual blood drive on Tuesday, February 19th from 3 pm - 7 pm through the Pint-Size Hero program.
