Dear Magruder Parents & Families,
I am excited to share with you about the upcoming WATCHDOGS Kickoff event on Thursday, January 31st. The event will start at 6:00 pm and will take place in the Cafeteria. WATCHDOGS is a national program that was started over 20 years ago to promote fathers, grandfathers, & other male role models to become more involved in their child’s school through volunteering, etc.  I’ve had positive experiences with the WATCHDOG program at previous schools and have noticed the impact the presence of WATCHDOGS volunteers has on students.  Fathers and grandfathers of MES students are encouraged to attend to learn more about the program and become connected with ways they can volunteer and help in the building.  Mr. Clint Bass, who is a parent at MES, will be overseeing the program and will be sharing additional details shortly.  Thank you to Mr. Bass and the MES PTA for sponsoring this wonderful program!
I would also like to officially welcome our new Records and Attendance Secretary, Mary Blackmon, to the MES staff.  She started last week in the front office and has made a positive impact already. She has over 25 years of experience in the administrative professional field, including many years with Newport News Public Schools. Please join me in welcoming Mrs. Blackmon to the Magruder team.
Thank you for continuing to support MES students and staff!
Mark Kirk
As a friendly reminder local law enforcement has significantly increased the monitoring of “No Parking/Bus Zone” locations at Magruder. This includes writing tickets for anyone parking along the curb of the school, blocking driveways, driving through the “Buses Only” zone, and parking in “No Parking” areas of the parking lot effective from approximately 6:45 am to 5:00 pm Monday – Friday.
Law enforcement has emphasized that this also involves families parking along the curb in front of the school to drop off or pick up students from the main office and students that attend the Champions program before and after school. Staff, families, and visitors are being reminded to follow the correct traffic path for the parking lot (use the “Panther Paws” route) and to park in appropriate parking spaces. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact the main office at (757) 220-4067.
MES is participating in the Clothing to Cash Recycling Program. Clean out your closet and help our school raise money! Magruder Elementary will be paid for every pound we collect. Look for the large white collection bin on the left side once you enter the school parking lot. The goal is to FILL our collection bin WEEKLY with as many plastic bags of clothing, shoes, and other textiles as possible. Help support our school and save the environment one bag at a time!
Parents are always welcome at MES!  When bringing your child to school in the mornings, we ask that you sign in before walking your children to their classroom and sign out before leaving the building. We also ask that each parent use the doorbell; located on the right brick wall at the main entrance to Magruder, to be acknowledged by office staff before entering the building. We also ask that once in the building you proceed to the main office for further assistance. Most importantly we ask that individuals entering the building do not hold the door for individuals that have not been acknowledged by using the doorbell system.  Thank you for your support in keeping our school safe!
Please remember to sign out at the end of your visit at MES; even in the morning after walking your students to class. Thank you!
The school hours for this school year 8:40 am – 3:20 pm. We will use the allotted time for instructional purposes to meet the needs of our students. Therefore, the office staff will not dismiss students between 3:00 pm – 3:20 pm to prevent disruption of the school day activities. We appreciate your assistance with this matter. Thank you.
Students begin entering the building at 8:30 am, with the tardy bell ringing at 8:40 am. Students should not arrive prior to 8:30 am, as supervision is not provided prior to that time. Before and after school daycare is provided by the Medallion Company (Champions) and is located in our MES Cafetorium. Their phone number is (757) 253-0781. Additionally, for the safety of our students, all students that arrive after 8:40 am must be signed in tardy at the main office by their parent/guardian. If there are no MES staff members outside in the drop off line please park your car and walk your student to the main office. If you have any further questions or concerns please contact the main office at 757-220-4067. We appreciate your assistance with this matter. Thank you.
All transportation changes must come to the office in writing. For the safety of our students we cannot take any requests over the telephone. Additionally, teachers will not have access to their classroom telephones during instructional time, and will only be able to access messages. If a student needs to ride the bus home with another student, the parents of both students must write a note requesting this arrangement. The notes should include the students’ first and last names, their teachers’ names and the bus route number. All transportation changes should be handed to teachers before class begins.
For the safety of our students and staff during loading (3:00 – 4:00 pm) and unloading (8:15 – 9:00 am) please note that there should be NO CAR traffic in our bus loop located in the front of Magruder Elementary.
Magruder Elementary School is partnering with the American Red Cross to host our 2nd Annual blood drive on Tuesday, February 19th from 3 pm - 7 pm through the Pint-Size Hero program. This program will introduce students to the importance of blood donation and will provide lifesaving blood products for hospital patients. Our students will have the opportunity to show leadership and help save lives by recruiting blood donors for our upcoming blood drive. Each student who recruits an adult to donate will be recognized as a Pint-Size Hero with a fun gift from the Red Cross. You can support this program by donating blood, recruiting other donors or volunteering at the blood drive. Please schedule your blood donation appointment at
As a friendly reminder, please remember to supply a change of clothes; to include underpants and socks for all PreK – 2nd grade MES students. We will no longer provide a change of clothes from the clinic due to various allergies. These items will be kept in each classroom for the students, and should be changed out seasonally. Please place all items in a gallon sized ziploc bag labeled with your child’s name. If you have any questions please contact Mrs. Robinson, RN at (757) 220-4583. Thanks!
Too Sick for School
Keeping a sick child at home prevents the spread of illness in the school community and allows the child an opportunity to rest and recover. Please use the symptoms below as guidelines for when it is better for your child - and his/her classmates - to stay home and recuperate:
Flu-like symptoms
Fever over 100 degrees
Active gastrointestinal symptoms
Coughing up yellowish or greenish phlegm
Excessive eye watering or drainage
Any open sores which appear to be infected (red, warm to touch)
Evidence of lice/nits that have not been treated
If you have any questions about these guidelines, please contact the school’s nurse or your family physician.
