Dungeons and Dragons
Faculty Advisors – Mr. Payne and Mr. Ellis
Are you willing to face a dragon?
Dungeons and Dragons (D&D) is a fantasy role playing game (RPG) in which players create characters and embark on adventures. Dungeons and Dragons relies on one of the oldest human traditions, storytelling. 'The core of D&D is storytelling. You and your friends tell a story together, guiding your heroes through quests for treasure, battles with deadly foes, daring rescues, courtly intrigue and much more.' – Dungeons and Dragons official website.
The goal is to have fun journeying through adventures that Dungeons & Dragons can provide. The club encourages students to coordinate and plan as a team. It is also an effective way to socialize.
- Dungeons and Dragons is a pen and paper game (not a video game).
Players keep track of characters on a character sheet.
- This game takes place at a table, not running around in a field.
Some people confuse D&D with Live Action Role Play (LARP) which is a completely different game that takes place by acting as a character and running around usually in an outdoor setting.
- You do not have to act as your character if you don’t want to.
While many people find it fun to role play their character you do not have to. However, I encourage you to use this as an excuse to try and be someone you may not normally be.
- Only nerds play Dungeons and Dragons, why would I?
There are many people who would proudly consider themselves a nerd that play D&D. There are tons of people who like to hang out with friends and find the most ridiculous ways to complete a quest. Some examples of famous players; The Rock, Terry Crews, Vin Diesel, Tim Duncan, Stephen King, Robin Williams, Stephen Colbert, and Curt Schilling.
- You do not have to bring any former knowledge about D&D to be able to play.
We welcome any and all new players provided that they show up with an open mind. I didn’t start playing D&D until college and I have had some of the best times and made a ton of new friends playing this game.
Contact the team sponsors, Mr. Payne (jpayne@ycsd.york.va.us) or Mr. Ellis (cellis@ycsd.york.va.us), with questions.

Odyssey of the Mind
Odyssey of the Mind is an international educational program that teaches students to learn creative problem-solving methods while having fun working with a team. By tapping into creativity, and through encouraging imaginative paths to problem solving, students learn life-long skills including teamwork, trial and error solutions, spontaneous thinking, mechanical and prop construction, costume making, and public performance
A team of seven students create an eight-minute performance presenting a solution to an Odyssey of the Mind problem. The team creates all parts of the solution such as props, costumes, and backdrops. Teams bring their solutions to competition (virtually or in person) on the regional, state, and World level. The team will also participate in a spontaneous thinking portion at competition.
This club required an audition since the Odyssey of the Mind team limit is seven students. Team members meet for practices on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and some Saturdays.
Contact the team sponsor, Mrs. Schantz (mschantz@ycsd.york.va.us), with questions.
