    SHIP SHAPE
    Attendance Program

In an effort to raise attendance awareness and meet the school wide attendance goal of 97% or higher we are setting sail with our Ship Shape attendance program again this year. Beginning September 30, we will be asking 1st block teachers to encourage their students to have a “Ship Shape” class.  How can your class be Ship Shape?  All students are present and on time.

We will pick a weekly winning class at random to be the Ship Shape class of the week.  The winning class will be announced during morning announcements and each student will receive Clipper Cash.

We will also track Ship Shape classes throughout the month.  The winning class will be the one with the highest percentage of Ship Shape days.  Prize is TBD and may be different each month.

Good luck and have fun! Go Clippers!

  • Attendance Notes

Students need to bring in a note the day they return from an absence. These notes should be brought to the attendance office first thing in the morning.

Parents can also email the attendance secretary, Ann Claire Hunter, with notes.

  • Unexcused Absences

To comply with the Code of Virginia § 22.1-254, students are expected to attend school every day and be on time unless there is illness or death in the immediate family. Doctor, dental, or personal appointments should be made on days off, half days, or after school hours when possible. Parents/Guardians are responsible for providing the school with a note (within 24 hours) indicating the reason(s) for the absence. Legitimate reasons for absences are: illness, death in immediate family, doctor or dental appointment (not possible to be scheduled on non-school time), and/or exceptional circumstances as determined by the building principal.
Absences occurring on pre-determined test dates should be avoided and will only be considered excused under extreme extenuating circumstances. For any other reason, the absence is unexcused.

    (YCSD Student handbook, page 14)

Virginia Department of Education and YorkCounty School Division regulations for unexcused absences are:

    • 5 Unexcused Absences- An attendance letter is sent home and an attendance plan is developed
    • 6 Unexcused Absences- An attendance conference will be held that includes the parent/gaurdian and appropriate school and division personnel
    • 7 Unexcused Absences- The school divicsion truancy team will meet and a possible court referral or additional interventions will be made

     Chronic Absenteeism

Students who miss 10 or more days of school or 10% of the school year (18 days in a 180 school day year, about 2 days a month) whether the absences are excused or unexcused, are considered chronically absent. It is very important that students miss as little school as possible so that they receive consistent instruction and do not fall behind their peers. Having your student present and in class on time also allows teachers to regularly track student progress and provide intervention and support when necessary.

  • Attendance Letters

Parents/Guardians will receive written notification from the school when a student has accumulated five unexcused and ten total absences. An accumulation of five unexcused absences will result in a referral to the school division attendance officer, and, if an additional unexcused absence occurs, the attendance officer and parents/ guardians will be required to participate in the development of a plan to improve the student’s attendance.

  • Athletic Attendance

A student must be present at school for at least half of the day to be eligible to play in any athletic events that day.
