Welcome to Mrs. Minor's Reading Page

Mrs. Minor is the reading specialist at Dare Elementary.  As the reading specialist, she provides reading remediation services, diagnoses reading difficulties and works closely with classroom teachers to achieve reading success for all students.  Students are identified by the reading specialist based on grade-level reading criteria.  Students are selected for remediation services based on the following sources:

PALS (Phonological Awareness and Literacy Screening) in grades K-3

Rigby (running record and comprehension assessment)

    SOL scores

    Teacher recommendations & classroom performance

    Reading Interventions

These services are given during remediation times for each grade level.

Fundations:  Wilson Fundations is a Title 1 federal program for K-2 students.  Students are selected for this service based on PALS data as the program targets skills in phonemic awareness, spelling, decoding and phonics.  This is a year long intervention in which children meet for 30 minutes every day in a small group.  Children will be working with a trained Title 1 paraeducator or the reading specialist.

Making Connections:  This is a reading improvement program that develops comprehension and fluency in reading mostly nonfiction selections.  Students meet in small groups (about 3 students) for 30 minutes every day with a trained paraeducator.  It is a semester long program offered for grades 1-5.  This program is for students performing close to on grade level who could benefit from an extra reading boost.

Reading Specialist Literacy Group: The reading specialist will meet with groups of students who need assistance in various areas of reading.  Groups will vary in size and duration and will focus on reading instruction the students identified need.
